Sharing the good news in an anxious day
To say that we are living in an anxious day would be an understatement. One person admitted, “I have so much to worry about that if anything else came along it would be at least a month before I could get to it!”
If we have good health, we worry that cancer might be our fate. If we have a good job, we worry that we might not have it for long.
I am amused at the story of a man that came to work one morning, and his fellow workers noticed that he was as worried as a centipede with athlete’s foot. They asked, “What are you so worried about?” He answered, “Several years ago I came home from work, and my wife was whistling a tune entitled, Tea for Two and shortly thereafter we had twins. Then a few years later I came home one night, and she was reading a book entitled, The Three Musketeers and shortly thereafter we had triplets.” They asked, “But what are you so worried about today?” He answered, “Last night I came home from work, and she was reading a book entitled Birth of a Nation.”
With that anxiety in mind, how does a believer share Christ in an anxious day?
I would not claim to have all the answers to that question, but I do know that there are two essentials. They are brought out for us in the chapter of Scripture that discusses worry and anxiety. As we follow these essentials (and so much more could be said) it gives us the opportunity to share the gospel in a world filled with worry. We demonstrate to others that we too have concerns, but it is WHO we know, not what we know, that makes the difference.
1. As believers we can live above the level of those who have never met the Savior.
“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.” (Matthew 6:31–32, NKJV)
Practically speaking, that means God knows how much you have in the bank and how much you are going to need. He knows what your health is like now and what it will be like ten years from now. He knows what your job situation is at the moment and what it will be months and years down the road. Therefore, fear and worry do not have to characterize our lives. We have the same concerns everyone else has, but these concerns do not turn into worry.
God has every right to expect those who do not know Him to worry; He has every right to expect us not to.
What happens when we follow that command? Opportunities open up for the gospel. People want to ask, “Why are you not worried?” We can then explain that our answer is found in Someone, not something.
2. If we take care of our Father’s business, He will take care of ours.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33, NKJV)
Practically speaking, God is saying that if we are going to worry, we ought to worry about having a consistent prayer life, studying the Word carefully, treating others as He would have us to, and sharing the gospel with others. In doing so, if we take care of His business, He takes care of ours. In “seeking the kingdom of God,” there is nothing that concerns Christ more than the salvation of the lost.
At this point I need to add that when we share the gospel, we must share it clearly—we come to God as sinners, recognize that Christ died on the cross taking the punishment for sin we deserved, and rose again the third day. It is when we trust Jesus Christ as our one and only way to heaven that we receive His free gift of eternal life. Romans 6:23 tells us, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
The bottom line is that in sharing Christ in an anxious day, we need to point them to Someone not something. That Someone is bigger than any worry or problem they face, and He knows what is going to happen tomorrow better than they know what has happened today. Hence, upon trusting Christ, they can do what 1 Peter 5:7 says, “Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
While life will never be problem-free, with Him it can be worry-free.
